I never quite got this. Though I did read it when I was alot younger.

Hmmm. I am a very big fan of the Hitch-Hikers Guide series, but this felt like a cheap knock-off of it. Some of the characters map directly on to Hitch-Hikers archetypes, and it just feels... well, kind of dirty. It just doesn't hang together as well as it could and isn't in any way memorable or iconic. Sure, there are some funny gags and Dirk Gently is undoubtably very cool in that kind of gentle and smug Adams way, but this just doesn't measure up to his other writing and I can't critique it in a vacuum. So - low marks.

A gently skewed look at reality, using Adam's usual deft comic timing and intelligent writing. Brilliant

If I could give half stars this would be 4.5 I think. Very enjoyable and very clever. Adams was obviously an ideas man primarily but there's a lot of good plot and clever twists to keep the reader interested. Not really much more to say about this really; it won't change your life but it'll make you laugh. 4 out of 5.

Very poor indeed. I have never understood the enduring popularity of Douglas Adams, his books (particularly this one) are about as funny as life-threatening bowel conditions with contrived plots and one-dimensinal characters that would be more at home in the imagination of a four year old.

Funny most of the way through, but never side-splittingly so. I think Douglas Adams makes a better script writer than author.
